Kilifi launches Grade 10 scholarship programme for over 1,000 students

The Kilifi County Government has launched a Full Scholarship Program targeting students joining Grade 10 in Cluster 1 senior secondary schools.

The programme, implemented through the Department of Education, will benefit more than 1,000 bright and deserving learners from the county who attained 61 points and above and secured placement in Cluster 1 schools.

Speaking during the launch ceremony in Kilifi, Deputy Governor Flora Mbetsa Chibule said the county had disbursed Sh150 million to cater for full tuition fees.

“We have released Sh150 million to support over 1,000 students under the Grade 10 Full Scholarship Program, with tuition fees being paid directly to schools to enhance efficiency, accountability and uninterrupted learning,” said Chibule.

She noted that while the county government is covering tuition costs in full, parents and guardians still have a responsibility.

“Parents and guardians are required to provide school uniforms and other personal requirements for the learners,” she declared.

The Deputy Governor said the initiative underscores the county administration’s commitment to expanding access to quality education for vulnerable children.

“This programme is meant to ensure a smooth transition to senior secondary school and guarantee that no child is left behind due to financial challenges,” she added.

On his part, County Executive Committee Member for Education, Felkin Kaingu, said the department is closely monitoring the progress of the beneficiaries.

“We are keenly following up on these students to ensure they receive the necessary support and are not exposed to distractions that may interfere with their learning,” said Kaingu.

He also called on parents and grassroots leaders to help keep the beneficiaries in school, citing challenges experienced in previous cohorts.

“We have reports that about 300 beneficiaries from the previous intake cannot be traced in the schools they joined, and this is a concern we must address collectively,” he said.

The county government reaffirmed that education remains a key pillar of its development agenda, aimed at ensuring equitable access to learning opportunities for all students in Kilifi County.
