Kisii matatu owners urge govt to reduce fuel

The Matatu Owners Association (MOA) in Kisii County has appealed to the government to reduce fuel prices to help lower the rising cost of transport services in the region.

Speaking to the press at the Kisii Main Stage, MOA representative Justus Moseti said the prevailing economic challenges and high fuel costs have forced transport operators to increase fares, further burdening commuters and contributing to the high cost of living.

Moseti noted that many public transport operators have raised fares significantly, with a one-way trip from Kisii to Nairobi now costing up to Sh2,000, compared to Sh1,500 previously.

“The current fuel prices are unsustainable for operators and commuters alike. We urge the government to intervene by reducing fuel costs so that transport charges and the prices of essential commodities can come down,” said Moseti.

Another association member, Peter Monyancha, questioned why fuel prices in Kenya remain higher than those in neighbouring countries.

He called on the government to take urgent measures, noting that a reduction in fuel costs would lower the prices of goods and ease the economic burden on citizens.

Homeboys Transport Company Manager Erastus Ogembo observed that the back-to-school period following the festive season has placed heavy financial pressure on parents and guardians.

He advised parents to release students early to enable them to secure transport conveniently and avoid last-minute rushes at bus stages.

Ogembo also urged drivers to exercise caution on the roads during the busy travel period to prevent accidents.

In addition, he called on parents and guardians to guide students, particularly those loitering at bus stages, and help them board vehicles safely.

According to the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA), current pump prices in major towns stand at Sh184.52 per litre for super petrol, Sh171.47 per litre for diesel, and Sh154.78 per litre for kerosene.
