Kwale is set to host the 2025 Confederation of Africa Cycling (CAC) Road Cycling African Championships from November 19 to 23, 2025.
The event is expected to bring together cyclists from 36 different nationalities set to battle it out for honors and experience the warmth and beauty of the coastal county.
This marks the second consecutive year Kenya is hosting the continental competition, following the inaugural 2024 edition held in Eldoret.
The event will feature multiple categories, including road racing, time trials, and mountain biking, and aims to boost tourism and inspire youth participation in the sport.
Kwale Governor Fatuma Achani hosted a delegation from the Kenya Cycling Federation (KCF) at her office to discuss preparations for the upcoming International Cycling Event set to take place in the county from November 19 to November 23, 2025.
Governor Achani encouraged Kenyans to embrace cycling as an alternative means of transportation and ‘because it promotes health and prevents a myriad of diseases.
The meeting focused on finalizing logistics and partnerships for the high-profile competition, which will bring together cyclists from 36 different nationalities to compete for the coveted title of international champion.
She said the cycling event will position Kwale as a growing sports tourism hub attracting national attention and investors.
This marks the second edition of the event to be hosted in Kenya, following the inaugural edition held in Iten, Eldoret, a region globally recognized for its excellent athletes.
Speaking after the meeting, Governor Achani expressed her enthusiasm for Kwale being selected as the next host by the Ministry of Youth Affairs, Creative Economy and Sports, describing it as a “transformative opportunity” for the county’s economy, sports sector, and tourism industry.
Hosting this international cycling event in Kwale presents a unique opportunity for our county,” said Governor Achani.
“It will shine a global spotlight on Kwale’s breathtaking scenery, our hospitality, and the immense potential of our people. We welcome athletes from 36 countries set to battle it out for honors to experience the warmth and beauty of Kwale.”
She added that the event is expected to stimulate local economic growth, attract new investments, and boost tourism across the coastal county.
“Sporting events of this magnitude are more than just competition; they bring jobs, promote local businesses, and inspire our youth. We are committed to working closely with the Kenya Cycling Federation and other partners to ensure the event’s success and to position Kwale as a leading sports tourism destination,” she said.
The Kenya Cycling Federation, the national body responsible for the regulation and promotion of cycling in Kenya, has been instrumental in positioning the country as a rising hub for international cycling.
Through such events, the Federation aims to nurture local talent, foster global partnerships, and grow cycling as both a sport and a tourism driver.
Officials from KCF praised Kwale’s unique terrain and scenic coastal routes, saying they offer the perfect environment for an excellent cycling challenge.
The upcoming event is expected to draw hundreds of visitors, athletes, and media representatives, injecting fresh momentum into Kwale’s hospitality, transport, and service sectors.
It will also provide a platform for local entrepreneurs, youth, and small businesses to benefit from the influx of international participants and tourists.
Governor Achani reaffirmed her administration’s commitment to investing in sports development, infrastructure, and tourism promotion, noting that Kwale’s inclusion in the global sporting calendar is a testament to the county’s growing capacity to host international events.
“We are ready to deliver an unforgettable event that will not only elevate cycling but also leave a lasting legacy of development and opportunity for our people,” she concluded.
The KCF delegation was led by the CEO Kelvin Mwangi, Chief Adviser to Salim Mvurya, the Cabinet Secretary Youth Affairs, Creative Economy and Sports Rodgers Chimega, event organizers of the Cycling event Hilda Tuwei and Lennert Aldehof.
KCF CEO Kelvin Mwangi said they are positioning Kenya as a host of major cycling events paving the way for nurturing talent, empowering youth, and strengthening the country’s footprint in the global cycling arena.
“We have identified Kwale as the venue because the county features a combination of extensive road networks, varied terrain and an enthusiastic county government,” he said.
Mwangi urged Kenyans to embrace cycling as both a sport and a means of transportation, highlighting its significant health and environmental benefits.
He said the discussion centred on logistics, partnership and the way area residents can benefit directly from the competition.
Also present was Deputy Governor Chirema Kombo, County Executive Committee Members (CECMs) Francisca Kilonzo (Sports) Ali Joto (Roads) and Michael Mutua (Trade and Tourism).
