KWS urged to take advantage of modern technology in conservation

Kenya Wildlife Services (KWS) has been urged to take advantage of modern technology to boost conservation efforts.

Speaking in Nanyuki, KWS officials said that due to advancements in technology, modern equipment was necessary in addressing existing challenges in the wildlife conservation sector, including poaching, which posed a threat to natural heritage.

Laikipia East Deputy County Commissioner (DCC), Patrick Muli, noted that the majority of rangers worked in hardship areas and dangerous zones; however, by leveling up on technology, it would make their work easy.

“In old days, there was no monitoring of wild animals with drones, but things have been simplified because of technology. So, let’s take advantage of it to make sure we fully do conservation,” urged Muli.

The DCC cautioned against destruction of natural resources, pointing out conservation generated a lot of funds for the country through tourism.

“Anyone joking with wild animals, don’t take chances. We know the amount of money we are getting through conservation efforts and specifically tourism; it’s where we are getting money for development and our salaries,” said the DCC.

He acknowledged the role played by the rangers, lauding their commitment amid harsh conditions and at the same time assuring them of the government’ support on the protection of biodiversity.

Muli called on stakeholders to back up rangers for them to effectively execute their work.

Laikipia Senior Warden Patrick Karoki noted that partnering with local conservancies boosted the efforts of ensuring Kenya achieves its conservation target and that the wildlife ecosystem thrives for future generations.

Corporal Bejja Mgala, a ranger stationed in Laikipia, urged for timely payment of compensation claims for the human-wildlife conflict victims.
