Low turn out marked the Ugunja constituency by election as candidates and leaders called for peace during the event.
A spot check by Kenya News Agency found low key activities in most polling stations, as voters trickled in one by one.
Addressing the media at various polling stations, the candidates, among them Orange democratic Movement candidate, Moses Okoth Omondi and Federal Party of Kenya’s Dr Maurice Juma Okumu hailed the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) for a job well done.
Omondi who addressed the media at Siror Primary school where he cast his vote exuded confidence of winning the seat but expressed disappointment with the low turnout.
His opponent, Dr Okumu, who voted at Ugunja primary school and equally exuded confidence of emerging the winner said he expected the result to reflect the good leadership that IEBC officials in Ugunja have shown throughout the preparations for the exercise.
Energy cabinet secretary, Opiyo Wandayi, who voted at Lwanda primary school in Sidindi ward urged the residents to maintain peace throughout the exercise.
Wandayi at the same time condemned incidents of violence that had been reported in some parts of the country where by elections were being held.
“It is a matter of concern to us as leaders from this region and I am appealing for calm not only in Kasipul but everywhere” he said adding that elections cannot be a matter of life and death.
