Maasai Mara lodge holds annual Cake Mixing Festival

A global tourism camp in the world-famous Maasai Mara National Reserve in Narok County has held its Annual Cake Mixing Festival to usher in the December peak tourism season.

Speaking during the event, the Sarova Mara Lodge Manager, Jane Kiragu, said the 2025 Cake Mixing Ceremony will be feasted by guests from across the world to mark the bond between the facility and its clientele.

Kiragu said the Hotel recently won the global award as the best tented camp in the world, as well as the best luxury camp in East Africa, adding further to the Magical Kenya Signature experience with the organic garden experience.

She says the season has been blooming despite challenges such as the hiking of the park fees, which has not affected the tourist flow.

Kiragu lauded the County government for maintaining order, infrastructure and wildlife protection, especially during the recent wildebeest migration spectacle.

Deputy Chief Park Warden Dickson Ole Keiwua termed the 2025 tourism as the best, as it has received the highest number of tourists in 20 years.

Keiwua has, however, called on the community surrounding the park to continue helping the County in conserving the tourism jewel.

Some tourists who attended the Ceremony were all smiles as they described the event, a memorable one during this year’s festive season.

Kender Kidur from London took his stay at the Mara as fantastic, as he wasable to see his favourite wildlife.

The Lodge Chef, Viona Koskei, who is celebrating her one year at the facility, said the Cake Mixing has been a tradition done since the 16th Century.

She said the Mixing, which is mostly done by friends and families, will be macerated for the next one month, before being served.

She also said that the majority of the materials, such as dry fruits, are sourced locally from the Lodge garden and are mixed with grains, nuts and spices to make a fruitcake weighing 100kg.
