Makueni targeting to register over 13, 000 new voters

At least 13, 671 new voters are targeted for registration in Makueni County, during the ongoing voter registration exercise countrywide.

The county Independent Elections and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) coordinator Maurice Raria said they expect to enlist 2, 738 new voters in Mbooni constituency, Kilome-1,688, Kaiti 1,859, Makueni 2,929, Kibwezi West-2,611 and Kibwezi East- 1,847.

At the same time, the Makueni sub county Registration Officer (RO) Florence Mogaka, speaking to Kenya News Agency (KNA) in her Wote Office, she said the exercise will be carried out in the 187 registration centres in the area.

Mogaka said the exercise will be done on daily basis from Monday to Friday between 8am and 5pm, urging all eligible citizens to carry their original identity cards or a valid passports for them to qualify for registration.

“We are calling on the young people to come out and register in their numbers. They are the majority and their voice matters,” urged Mogaka.

“Any Kenyan seeking to register should have the original identity card or a valid passport. This will ultimately enable you to exercise your democratic right to vote,” she added.

Mogaka also disclosed that registered voters who may want to verify their details as captured in the register can visit any of the registration centres, besides those intending to transfer their names to other constituencies.

“We have an open kit for entire country under the Kenya Integrated Elections System Management (KIEMS) that can capture your details and place you to vote in the constituency of your choice. There will be no need of travelling far to change your elective area,” she reiterated.

The RO said that they had deployed two people per ward to educate and mobilize citizens, with a view to boosting awareness and improving the turnout during this crucial period of voter registration.

“I hope the increased civic education and community outreach will help bridge the gap and encourage more citizens especially first-time voters to register,” she observed.

Mogaka revealed that they had also engaged other stakeholders like village elders, chiefs and their assistants with a view to enhancing dissemination information to make the exercise a success.
