Mandera County is experiencing a surge in displaced individuals fleeing conflicts in the neighbouring Bulla Hawa region, Somalia.
The displaced individuals mostly women and children, have crossed into Kenya seeking safety after being uprooted from their homes due to ongoing clashes between Somalia’s Federal Government forces and Jubaland regional forces.
Meanwhile, Local officials and humanitarian agencies have raised concerns over the increasing number of arrivals, calling for immediate support to address the urgent needs of the affected families.
On the frontline of the response, the Kenya Red Cross is providing displaced individuals with makeshift tents and other basic necessities to help them cope with the harsh conditions.
According to local authorities, over 400 households are taking refuge in Mandera, hoping the fighting will cease to enable them to return safely to their homes in Somalia.
The influx of displaced people has put pressure on local resources, yet Mandera residents show compassion and solidarity by supporting them.
Hence, the crisis underscores the urgent need for enhanced cross-border peace initiatives and sustained humanitarian aid to prevent further displacement.
