The Municipality of Masalani this week held a series of activities aimed at enhancing service delivery, improving infrastructure, and fostering intergovernmental collaboration.
Masalani Municipality Chief Executive Officer Yussuf Mohamed Towane told KNA that the programme, which included unblocking the drainage system and town cleaning, was supported by stakeholders including youths, government departments and local communities.
Towane spoke to KNA after addressing the Masalani Municipality board members during its quarterly board meeting, which brought together key leadership in the municipality to assess ongoing projects and strategise on the implementation of development initiatives.

Mr Towane said the meeting emphasised accountability, good governance, and aligning municipal efforts with county and national priorities.
On a town cleaning exercise, the board launched a major town-wide cleaning initiative with the goal of improving sanitation and public hygiene.
Mr Towane said the exercise involved coordinated efforts by municipal staff, local youth groups, and community volunteers to clean streets, public spaces, and waste collection points.
The campaign not only enhanced the town’s cleanliness but also promoted community ownership and environmental responsibility.
Mr Towane noted that drainage system maintenance was enhanced to address persistent flooding and water stagnation issues, while the Municipality undertook an intensive operation to unblock drainage systems across Masalani.
“These efforts are essential in preparing for potential rains, ensuring proper water flow, and reducing the risk of waterborne diseases.
The work also contributes to the Municipality’s broader resilience and disaster preparedness,” noted the Municipality CEO.
Stakeholder engagement forums were also held, aimed at strengthening partnerships and fostering collaboration between different levels of government, development partners, civil society, and the private sector.
These meetings served as a platform to discuss shared challenges, align development priorities, and encourage inclusive decision-making.
The CEO said significant progress has been made in the operationalisation of Masalani Municipal Market, which the residents are yearning for.
Towane noted that this flagship project is set to boost the local economy by providing a modern, organised space for traders and consumers. Once fully operational, the market will enhance revenue generation for the Municipality and offer improved business opportunities for locals.
“The productivity of the Municipality of Masalani is through focused leadership, well-coordinated action and active community participation, and the Municipality continues to deliver on its mandate and make tangible improvements in the lives of its residents. These achievements are a testament to the hard work and commitment of the entire municipal team, partners, and stakeholders,” Mr Towane noted.
Member for County Assembly (MCA) for Masalani ward Yunis Abdi and Masalani watchdog Chairman Mr Abdullahi Abdi appealed to the CEO and board members to allocate the market stalls to over 130 traders who include mama mboga (vegetable vendors), butchery owners, milk vendors and mirra kiosk to improve the Municipality’s economy and collect revenue from stall owners for improvement and maintenance of the market.
The Masalani watchdog Chairman, Mr Abdullahi Abdi, also appealed to the board to clear the mathenge weed menace, which has covered the entire town with its roots, destroying the tarmac road and newly built houses.
