Mathare United stun KCB 1-0 in Sportpesa league

Mathare United FC edged KCB FC 1- 0 claiming their first win in their 2025 /26 SportPesa league on Friday in a rain-soaked clash at the Kasarani Annex, Nairobi.

The match that was played under rainy conditions saw Mathare United stun their opponent with captain Elli Asieche’s a stunning free kick in the 43rd minute in the first half handing over Mathare United their first win in the season.

KCB almost drew level when Kevin Ouru produced a one-handed save, pushing the ball onto the woodwork to deny the Bankers a goal.

Despite KCB’s push for an equaliser in the second half and their ball-dominant possession, they struggled to breach their opponents’ defence as Mathare held firm to seal all three points away from home.

KCB was seeking a second consecutive win after defeating Tusker FC in their debut opener of the SportPesa League last Friday, while Mathare United were desperate for a win to secure three points after their defeat by Posta Rangers on Monday.

Mathare United FC Head Coach, John Kamau, speaking after the match said that he was happy with the outcome of the game and praised the boys whose defence stood resolute during the entire match despite KCB maintaining their offensive pressure.

“We seized our opportunity in the first half with a set piece from Asieche with our single clear chance,” he said adding that the win has motivated the team to play even better in the upcoming games.

KCB Head coach, Robert Matano, said that it was a tough match played under difficult conditions, but they had to move on quickly, noting that their focus now is on Kariobangi Sharks and they must prepare well to bounce back.

“We crafted more promising chances but lacked the finishing touch to score goals, which was unfortunate on our side,” he said.

Mathare United will face Tusker FC on October 2, seeking to register their second win, while KCB will play Kariobangi Sharks on Tuesday, September 30.

The results lifted Mathare United to fifth place in the standings, while KCB, despite suffering their defeat, remains second after two rounds in the Sportpesa League.
