Renowned Mau Mau General Kiambati Wanjora from Nyandarua County has passed on aged 106 years.
His death was confirmed by his son Maina Kiambati, who attributed it to old age.
Meanwhile, condolences for the fallen Mau Mau hero continued to pour in on Tuesday with leaders remembering him as a selfless person.
Nyandarua Woman Representative Ms Faith Gitau said Kiambati has played a major role in advocating for the interests of his fellow freedom fighters.
Ms Gitau said the fallen hero’s life should remain a constant reminder to current and future generations of the importance of amplifying selflessness over personal interests.
“Since old soldiers never die, General Kiambati has only faded away,” noted Ms. Gitau.
On his part, former Nyandarua Governor Francis Kimemia urged the county government to accord him a “County Burial” equivalent to the state burial given to national leaders.
“As a key commander in Nyandarua forests, his bravery among the elite “Twelve Generals” accelerated our march to freedom. His legacy is not only written in history books but also etched in the very soil of the land he fought to liberate,” noted Kimemia.
The former governor said during his tenure as second governor of Nyandarua he went beyond talks to address the long-neglected welfare of the freedom fighters based in the County.
He said the county facilitated their special treatment at the Catholic Church North Kinangop hospital, where some underwent surgeries to remove colonial-time bullets lodged in their bodies.
An aspirant for the Nyandarua women rep seat in the 2027 General election, Ms. Wanjiru Wachira condoled Kiambati as a hero. “His life remains a powerful testament to what dedication, courage, kindness and bravery can achieve,” added Ms. Wachira.
Another candidate for the Woman Rep seat, Ms. Wanjiku Muhoho, in her condolence message, said General Kiambati will be celebrated for his solid assertiveness in Kenya’s freedom struggle.
Additionally, she said that he ceaselessly pushed for dignified lives for freedom fighters, whom he added deserved compensation from those who tortured them.
The burial date for the fallen hero is yet to be announced.
