Modern Market Sparks Hope for Kimende Traders

A major construction project is taking shape in Kimende Market, and it is set to powerfully transform business operations and improve livelihoods in Kijabe Ward, Lari Municipality.

The ongoing construction of an ultra-modern market complex in Kimende, located in Kiambu County, began recently as part of Governor Kimani Wamatangi’s broader vision to uplift the local economy through infrastructural upgrading and revolution.

This vital development, unfolding in Kijabe Ward under Lari Municipality, is expected to benefit hundreds of traders and thousands of shoppers by offering a clean, organized, and more secure trading environment.

The project, commissioned by the County Government of Kiambu, has gained high momentum, with steelwork, foundation digging, and initial structural layout currently in progress.

Once complete, the new market will include modern stalls, storage areas, sanitation facilities, and designated spaces for fresh produce, clothing, and household items.

Speaking during an inspection tour, Beth wa Lari, a vocal supporter and resident leader, expressed optimism about the development.

“This is a game-changer for our people. Kimende traders have waited for a proper market for years, and now it’s finally happening. It will open up more opportunities for business and improve hygiene standards.”

Among the beneficiaries is Beatrice Njeri, a vegetable vendor who has operated in the area for over a decade. “We’ve been working in open spaces with no shade or water. Sometimes rain destroys our goods,” she shared. “Now we will have decent stalls, and customers will feel more comfortable shopping. This project means dignity for us.”

The market upgrade aligns with the county’s strategic plan to boost local economic growth through infrastructure and investment in small and medium enterprises (SMEs). The market will also help decongest roads, enhance revenue collection, and create more job opportunities for youth and women.

Construction is expected to be completed in phases, with the first block scheduled for use within the next few months.

The County Government has assured transparency and community involvement throughout the project. As the foundation strengthens, so does hope for a brighter, more organized, and empowered Kimende Market.
