Farmers in Meru County are encouraged to utilise the current rainfall to plant certified seeds to enhance food security.
Meru County Governor, Mutuma M’Ethingia, launched a seed distribution initiative as part of the county’s Food Security Programme, emphasising the region’s considerable arable land.
The exercise aims to promote sustainable farming and enhance food production across all wards in the region.
Mutuma stated that the programme aims to enhance maize production alongside distributing coffee and avocado seedlings.
He urged the youth to take farming seriously as a viable source of income.
“We are committed to empowering our farmers. In addition to maize seeds, we will also be distributing coffee and avocado trees to diversify agricultural production and create income opportunities,” said Governor Mutuma.
He also revealed plans to table a Miraa Bill, aimed at protecting miraa farmers and streamlining its trade and transportation across the region.
“We are in the final stages of drafting the Miraa Bill. Once enacted, it will ensure miraa farmers and traders are protected and can maximise the benefits of the crop without harassment,” he noted.
On security, the Governor highlighted the progress made in restoring peace in parts of Igembe and Ndumuuru, areas previously plagued by rampant livestock theft.
“We have deployed 72 security officers and a county government vehicle to the region, which has significantly improved security. Residents are now living in peace,” Governor Mutuma stated.
He also assured residents of Buuri that similar measures would be taken to address rising insecurity in the area.
“Thugs seem to have shifted their operations to Buuri, but we are alert. More officers will be deployed there soon to ensure the safety of our people and their property,” he added.
The Governor called on residents to remain vigilant, especially now that the country is in the festive season.
For us to serve you better, let’s share information with security personnel in your respective areas.” he said, adding that ‘we should embrace peace at all times and look after the safety of our children.’
