Nandi county upscales efforts to boost dairy sector 

Dairy farming in Nandi County, particularly in Tindiret sub county, has undergone a significant transformation in recent years.

The County Executive Committee Member for Agriculture and Cooperative Development, Dr. Kiplimo Lagat reported a significant increase in milk production from 471,850 liters to 600,000 liters per day.

Dr. Lagat credits the growth to the construction and equipping of 25 milk cooling plants and 16 more by farmers organizations, which improved milk collection, bulking, and quality. Thus, urging the dairy cooperatives to engage in value addition, branding and quality certification to elevate Nandi-branded products in the market.

Moreover, the county plans to establish a cooperative development fund to finance equipment, transportation, and digital systems.

He noted that the digitization would improve transparency, efficiency and accountability within the societies.

Farmers have been urged to keep highly productive dairy cows and embrace bulking in order to make profits.

Lastly, the speaker advocates for smallholder farmers to transition from subsistence farming to agribusiness, citing cooperative societies as a key factor in enhancing their earnings.
