Nandi county government has entered into a strategic partnership with the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA) to explore and invest in renewable energy projects across the county.
The collaboration will focus on harnessing Nandi’s vast potential in clean energy sources such as solar, wind, and small hydro-power.
The initiative is designed to promote sustainable development, expand access to reliable power, and reduce dependence on non-renewable energy.
Speaking during a consultative meeting, Nandi County Executive Committee Member (CECM) for Finance and Economic Planning CPA Alfred Lagat said the partnership would not only boost the county’s revenue streams but also spur job creation.
“This collaboration opens avenues to increase our revenue collection, which will in turn enhance service delivery. More importantly, renewable energy investments will create jobs for our youth and uplift the economic well-being of our people,” Lagat noted.
Officials from EPRA urged the county to move swiftly to tap into available opportunities within the energy sector, pointing out that the county’s rich natural resources provide a strong foundation for green energy ventures.
Experts note that Nandi is uniquely positioned to become a renewable energy hub in the region. With its rolling highlands and favourable climate, the county enjoys long hours of sunshine ideal for solar power projects, particularly in lowland areas such as parts of Aldai and Mosop.
The elevated terrain of Tinderet and Nandi Hills offers promising conditions for wind energy generation, while the county’s network of rivers including River Yala, Kipkaren, and Mogoon presents multiple sites suitable for small hydro-power development.
County officials believe that tapping into these resources would not only support households and industries with reliable, affordable power but also attract investors keen on green energy solutions.
Local have also welcomed the move, saying it would transform daily life. “Access to reliable and affordable electricity means we can run businesses without constant blackouts or expensive fuel generators. For us young people, it also creates jobs and makes it easier to start small enterprises,” said Brian Kiptoo, a youth entrepreneur from Mosoriot.
The initiative underscores the county’s commitment to environmental conservation, economic growth, and improved living standards for its residents.
By positioning itself as a leader in renewable energy adoption, Nandi aims to attract investors, while aligning with national and global goals on climate action and sustainable energy.
