The first batch of Grade Ten learners started reporting on Monday to various institutions nationwide, with about 200 students admitted at Nanyuki High School in Laikipia County.
According to the school administration, a total of 700 students are expected to join the national school by Friday this week as the pioneer class under the Competency-Based Education (CBE) curriculum.
Deputy Principal Gitonga King’ori said the majority of the students had opted for the STEM pathway, but the school has established a career guidance desk to advise learners on the best pathway based on personal interests and performance in the Kenya Junior Secondary Examination Assessment (KJSEA).

“We are offering the three pathways, and what we have noted is that pure sciences are the most popular, with the majority of learners selecting it. We have established a desk comprising the career department to guide learners based on their interests,” said King’ori.
He explained that the guidance was necessary because some learners may have chosen a pathway without adequate knowledge or due to pressure from peers or parents. The career desk will help students select pathways aligned with their KJSEA subject performance and personal aspirations.
Nanyuki High School, among the most sought-after in the country, offers all three pathways: STEM, social sciences, and arts and sports. The STEM pathway includes pure and applied sciences and technical studies, featuring six subjects, including the newly introduced metalwork. Social sciences offer six subjects, while arts and sports cover fine arts, music, dance, and several foreign languages.
Some parents who accompanied their children said the admission exercise was seamless. “I feel so grateful; the admission process has been smooth. My son has chosen social sciences because he wants to become a lawyer. Nanyuki High is one of the best schools, even according to the just-released KCSE results,” said parent Grace Gitonga.
The school expects the pioneer Grade Ten cohort to set a strong foundation for the Competency-Based Education system, offering students diverse pathways to shape their academic and career futures.
