New Kidney Institute to enhance regional healthcare

Kenya’s East Africa Centre of Excellence (EACE) for urology and nephrology is poised to play a pivotal role in addressing the growing burden of kidney and urologic diseases in the country and across the wider East African region.

The Centre seeks to strengthen specialised clinical services, expand advanced training for health professionals, and enhance research capacity in nephrology and urology to improve patient outcomes and build a sustainable workforce.

With Phase One complete, the facility is ready for initial operations once officially commissioned. Full operationalisation will follow the completion of the third and fourth floors, which are expected to significantly scale up service delivery, training programmes and research activities, positioning the institute as a regional referral hub for specialised kidney and urologic care.

In efforts to strengthen accountability and service delivery under key national priority programmes, the National Development Implementation Committee (NDIC) Social Sector Subcommittee conducted a field verification visit to the East Africa Kidney Institute. The exercise was led by James Ntabo, Secretary Administration at the Ministry of Health, representing the Principal Secretary for Medical Services, Dr Ouma Oluga.

The meeting, chaired by Principal Secretary for Gender and Affirmative Action Ms Anne Wangombe, reviewed the Institute’s progress and operational readiness. The facility has been designated as East Africa’s Level 6B Centre of Excellence in Urology and Nephrology and is a flagship project under the government’s Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda.

The visit also assessed implementation milestones, institutional capacity and alignment with the Government’s commitment to enhancing access to specialised healthcare services and advancing Universal Health Coverage.

Among those present were Principal Secretaries Ms Carren Ageng’o (Children Welfare Services) and Mr Fikirini Jacobs (Youth Affairs), Dr Andrew Toro, Director of Curative Services; Dr Nancy Njeru, Director of Healthcare Financing; and Dr Hossan Ajuk, Project Manager. Officials from the Government Delivery Unit and National Government Administration Officers were also in attendance.
