The newly established Ruiru fish market, located at the heart of the main and ever-busy Ruiru Market, is fast becoming the go-to destination for fresh, locally farmed fish.
Drawing hundreds of customers each day, the facility is breathing new life into Kiambu County’s aquaculture industry while giving fish farmers and vendors a much-needed economic boost.
Funded by the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) and Norway’s Development Agency NORAD, the market was developed under the Aquaculture Business Development Program (ABDP). The project is being implemented in Kiambu by the county’s Department of Agriculture through the Fisheries Directorate, and it aims to improve fish marketing, increase local incomes, and enhance food and nutritional security.
Unlike traditional open-air fish stalls, the Ruiru fish market was purposely built for fish trading. It features tiled counters for hygienic handling, cold storage units to maintain freshness, and a structured layout that ensures efficient vendor operations and customer flow. The result is a cleaner, safer, and more professional environment for both buyers and sellers.
“The Ruiru fish market is not just a trading center; it’s a beacon of economic opportunity and nutritional well-being for our communities,” said Raphael Kasiu. Kiambu County Fisheries Development Officer during a recent market tour. “We’re seeing a growing demand for fresh fish, and this facility ensures that local farmers are at the heart of that supply chain,” he added.
“This market is exactly what we needed,” says Esther Wanjiru, a local fish vendor who has been selling fish in Ruiru for over a decade. “Before, we were working under umbrellas with no proper storage. Sometimes we lost money when fish rotted in the sun. Now we have clean stalls, ice storage, and more customers. Business is better, and so is our dignity,” she explained.
The market stocks a variety of popular species, including tilapia, catfish, and Nile perch, all sourced from local fish farms. By reducing the supply chain, the market ensures that fish farmers earn more for their produce while offering consumers fair prices and fresher options.
The development also supports the ongoing ‘Eat More Fish’ campaign, which encourages fish consumption as a nutritious and affordable source of protein. The campaign contributes to the county’s goal of improving household nutrition and aligns with Governor Kimani Wamatangi’s socio-economic empowerment agenda.
“Empowering farmers starts with creating access to reliable markets,” said Governor Wamatangi in a recent statement. “The Ruiru fish market is a perfect example of what collaboration and smart investment can deliver.”
Residents are encouraged to visit the market, support local fish producers, and enjoy healthier meals.
