The National Fund for Disability Kenya (NFDK) has donated assistive mobility devices and business empowerment tools worth Sh1 million to People with Disabilities (PWD) in Machakos County, aiming to foster independence, entrepreneurship, and socio-economic empowerment.
Speaking at the District County Commissioner’s office in Machakos, Elizabeth Wanjohi highlighted that the initiative seeks to enhance self-reliance among PWDs by providing them with equipment necessary for mobility and income generation.
The donations included wheelchairs, hair salon equipment, farming tools, welding machines, wheelbarrows, ploughs, and cash for livestock, enabling recipients to start businesses and generate sustainable income.
Wanjohi urged beneficiaries to make proper use of the tools, describing them as seeds that must be nurtured to transform their lives.
“We have a monitoring and evaluation team that will return to ensure that the devices and tools are used for their intended purpose and not sold,” she added.
She encouraged recipients to inform and mobilize other PWDs about NFDK services, ensuring that all those in need are aware of available support.
Machira Gathungu, Deputy County Commissioner of Machakos, commended the NFDK for empowering PWDs at the grassroots level, ensuring equitable access to benefits that can transform their lives and those of their families.
The initiative aligns with the government’s commitment to enabling PWDs to live dignified, independent, and self-reliant lives.
The donation reinforces efforts to enhance economic participation and social inclusion for PWDs in Machakos County, providing tools and resources necessary for meaningful livelihood opportunities.
