NuPEA engages stakeholders over the proposed nuclear power plant

The Nuclear Power and Energy Agency (NuPEA) has intensified stakeholder engagement efforts within the Lake Region Economic Bloc (LREB) as part of ongoing consultations over the proposed nuclear power plant to be located in Siaya County.

A delegation led by NuPEA Board Chair, Prof. Lawrence Gumbe, held high-level discussions with Vihiga Governor Dr. Wilber Ottichilo, focusing on the projects economic and energy implications for the region.

Prof. Gumbe underscored the transformative potential of nuclear energy, noting that the initiative could serve as a key driver of economic growth across Western Kenya.

He cited prospects for job creation, industrialization and positioning Kenya as a regional leader in advanced energy technologies.

On his part, Dr. Ottichilo welcomed the engagement, emphasizing the need for public education and community involvement in shaping the future of energy in the region.

He said enhancing awareness on nuclear energy’s safety and benefits was crucial in securing public support and long-term sustainability.

The consultations are part of NuPEA’s wider public sensitization campaign to promote Kenya’s nuclear energy programme.

The agency is advocating for nuclear power as a viable solution to the country’s increasing energy needs, with a commitment to transparency, inclusivity and environmental responsibility.
