Nyamira aspirants urged to conduct peaceful campaigns

Nyamira County Commissioner Erastus Mbui has urged political aspirants cleared by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) to conduct peaceful and orderly campaigns ahead of upcoming by-elections in the county.

Speaking during Mashujaa Day celebrations at Ikonge Primary and Junior Secondary School (JSS) grounds on Monday, Mbui said Nyamira County will be holding three by-elections in different constituencies, and candidates must exercise restraint and respect for their opponents as they seek votes.

“We expect peaceful campaigns that show respect for all opponents because, at the end of the day, it is the voters who will decide who becomes their leader. Desist from making defamatory remarks about your competitors as such actions have legal consequences,” said Mbui.

The County Commissioner also reminded candidates to be mindful of national examinations scheduled to take place during the campaign period, noting that their activities should not disrupt learning institutions.

“You must remember that final exams for primary, Junior Secondary School, and secondary school learners will be ongoing. Avoid playing loud music near exam centres or disrupting students in any way. Stick to the IEBC campaign regulations and timelines to avoid unnecessary conflict,” he advised.

Mbui further noted that Nyamira County has ongoing national government development projects such as affordable housing units, modern markets, and tertiary institution hostels. He encouraged youths, skilled professionals, and Micro, Small and Medium Enterprise (MSME) traders to take advantage of the job and business opportunities arising from these projects.

“We have several construction works underway. I urge our young people and local traders to seize the employment and supply opportunities at these sites to earn a living and improve their livelihoods,” he said.

As the festive season approaches, Mbui urged residents to exercise moderation, ensure personal safety, and maintain peace and order.

During the celebrations, speakers eulogized the late Rt. Hon. Raila Amolo Odinga as a visionary and selfless leader whose legacy will continue to inspire generations.
