Self-help groups in Nambale Sub- County have received Sh1million in grants from the National Government Affirmative Action Fund (NGAAF) to boost household incomes and promote sustainable livelihoods.
Busia County Woman Representative Catherine Omanyo presided over the distribution exercise at Esidende Comprehensive School on Friday, where 10 registered groups each received Sh100,000 to expand their income-generating activities.
Omanyo said the grants are intended to strengthen grassroots economic empowerment, particularly among women, youth and persons with disabilities.
“We are giving out Sh1 million to 10 groups in this sub-county so that they can improve their projects and grow their businesses. This support will empower our people economically and help them achieve sustainable livelihoods,” she said.
She encouraged residents to form registered groups and initiate viable projects in order to benefit from future funding opportunities under NGAAF and other government programmes.
“We want to support women, youth and persons with disabilities, but you must belong to a registered group with an active project. Take advantage of these opportunities to uplift your standards of living,” she added.
The Woman Representative also cautioned beneficiaries against individuals posing as her agents and demanding kickbacks in exchange for the grants.
“This money is meant to benefit you fully. No one from my office will ask for any fee or refund. If anyone demands money in my name, report them to security agencies or inform me directly so appropriate action can be taken,” she warned.
Omanyo further called on residents to support ongoing government development projects across Busia County, citing investments in markets, road infrastructure and electricity connectivity aimed at stimulating local economies.
On political matters, she appealed for unity within the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), emphasizing the need for dialogue and inclusivity. She said these values were strongly championed by the late Raila Odinga.
“There is room for dialogue so that we move in the same direction. ODM is a party founded on democracy and inclusivity. Let us remain united and promote peace,” she said.
Omanyo also announced her intention to seek full ratification as the party’s Secretary General during the upcoming National Delegates Conference.
Nambale Sub- County Assistant County Commissioner Okoth Wendo urged residents to apply for national identification cards to access government services.
“Many people are missing out on essential services due to lack of IDs. Our elderly citizens, especially, face challenges in land succession processes. Let us ensure we acquire identification documents to benefit from government programmes,” he said.
