Makueni county governor Mutula Kilonzo Jr has officially commissioned Kwa Makau borehole in Mavindini Ward, Kathozweni Sub-County, which was funded by the Charity Water Mission to the tune of Sh10.2 million.
The project, implemented by Welt Hunger Hilfe (WHH), will benefit over 1,600 households in Katithi sub- location, Mavindini Ward, who will now access clean water for domestic and livestock use.
“The water will be distributed to 15 villages, while one secondary and three primary schools will also access clean water for domestic use. This has effectively brought to an end the perennial acute water shortage in the area,” said Mutula, while commissioning the borehole at Katithi village.
Among the schools that benefitted included Katithi, Mumberni and Mikisi primary schools and Katithi secondary school.
On his part, head of project at WHH Makueni, Nicolas Kimeu said the key works of the project included the installation of a solar system to pump water, building of a 50m³ storage tank and laying of 12.5km of pipeline and construction of six kiosks, each installed with PVC tank.
While saying they have implemented the project for the past one year, Kimeu disclosed that they had also constructed two ablution blocks at Katithi primary school for girls and teachers respectively.
“I urge the community to own this project for sustainability and ensure it provides water for the next 10 years according to the requirement of the sponsor,” he said, while addressing the beneficiaries.
Speaking at the same event, Mavindini Ward Member of County Assembly (MCA) Jonathan Kimongo challenged the area residents to safeguard the water infrastructure against vandalism.
Present at the event was the County Executive for Water and Sanitation Eng. John Kieti and other county government officials.
