Police intercept drugs worth Sh2.5 million at Namanga border

A multi-agency security team has intercepted a Kenya-bound bus from Tanzania ferrying cannabis sativa valued at approximately Sh2.52 million at the Namanga One-Stop Border Post.

The operation involved officers from the Anti-Narcotic Unit (ANU), Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA), Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS), and the Police Dog Unit.

According to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), the drugs were discovered during a routine roadside inspection after the bus—registration number T372 DWL, operated by Kidia One Express—was flagged down at the border.

A search conducted with the help of highly trained sniffer dogs led to the recovery of four tightly wrapped bundles containing 84 packets of cannabis, weighing a total of 84 kilograms.

The bus driver, George Ngoba, 37, and the conductor, Trisha Lucas, 25—both Tanzanian nationals—were arrested at the scene and are currently being held at Namanga Border Police Station pending arraignment in court.

Police have also impounded the bus as investigations continue, while the recovered narcotics have been detained as exhibit.

Kajiado County Police Commander Alex Shikondi warned drug traffickers against attempting to smuggle narcotics through the border, noting that security agencies are on high alert.

He added that detectives are pursuing the main suspect believed to have been waiting to receive the consignment in Nairobi.

Meanwhile, Namanga Customs Manager Nicholas Mugambi reaffirmed KRA’s commitment to working with other agencies to curb drug trafficking at the border.
