Police rescue injured child amid gender-based violence concerns in Vihiga

Police in Vihiga have rescued a five-year-old boy who was found helpless along the roadside with a deep cut wound on his head, in what is suspected to be a case linked to domestic violence.

According to Vihiga County Police Commander Zacharia Bitok, the child was discovered during an inspection tour of ongoing government projects in the area.

Bitok says he immediately halted his assignment to intervene and ensure the safety of the minor.

“We couldn’t ignore the situation. The child’s safety is our top priority.” Bitok said.

Following the rescue, preliminary investigations revealed that the child’s mother had been chased away from home by the father. The household has now been flagged for ongoing gender-based violence, prompting a deeper probe by relevant authorities.

Commander Bitok directed officers and local administrators to assess the situation at the family’s home. Social services are now involved, and the child is under temporary care. He is expected to be taken in by the Vihiga Child Rescue Team or placed in a children’s home as investigations continue.

This incident comes as Vihiga County ramps up efforts to combat gender-based violence. Recently, the county launched a Gender-Based Violence (GBV) Recovery Centre designed to provide a safe haven for survivors. The facility offers support services including counselling, legal aid, and a framework for holistic healing and empowerment.

The police have reiterated their commitment to protecting vulnerable populations and urged the public to report any suspected cases of abuse or neglect through the nearest police station or community administrator.
