Garissa County security team has intercepted 1,280 litres of contraband petrol valued at Sh 200,000, suspected to have been smuggled from neighbouring Somalia, and arrested one person who will be arraigned in court once investigations are complete.
Garissa County Commissioner, Mohamed Mwabudzo, said the fuel was being transported in a Toyota Probox, registration number KDR 145E, which was intercepted by police following a tip-off from members of the public.
The arrest comes barely a week after the same security team closed two illegal fuel outlets operating in Garissa town. “We have intercepted at least 60 20-litre jerricans full of contraband petrol, worth more than Sh 200,000, which were intended for sale to local residents,” said Mwabudzo.
He warned that the crackdown on contraband goods would continue until smuggling is completely eradicated. “Woe unto those who think they can successfully bring illegal products into this county. They will lose because we will arrest them and seize all contraband products,” he added.
Mwabudzo reaffirmed that the County Security Team is committed to stopping all illegal business activities, particularly those involving products from across the Somali border. He said the team will ensure that those involved in smuggling face full legal action.
The County Commissioner urged residents to cooperate with authorities and report any illegal trade activities to support the fight against contraband, noting that such efforts protect both consumers and legitimate businesses.
