Protests are dangerous for the Country, Embu Leaders Warn

A section of Embu leaders has warned that the ongoing Gen Z-led protests, could plunge the country into anarchy.

Led by Senator Alexander Mundigi, the leaders said the past protests have proven to be detrimental to both economic and social fabric of the country.

He said if untamed, the protests that have led to loss of lives and massive looting and destruction of both public and private property could reverse the gains made so far.

“What has taken us decades to build in terms of economy and social wellbeing could be lost forever if we are not careful,” he said.

Speaking, Sunday, at St. Peter’s Anglican Church of ACK Church in Siakago, Mbeere North Constituency, Mundigi called on the youth to resist being used by politicians to settle political scores.

“I appeal to our youth to refuse being used as political pawns in violent protests in the name of peaceful demonstrations,” he said, while accusing some opposition figures of being behind the chaos.

He also called on those organizing protests in commemoration of Saba Saba Day on July 7th to rescind their decision to allow the country to move on peacefully.

At the same time, Senator Mundigi asked the Government to prosecute individuals who looted and destroyed businesses during the recent protests.

“Our economy is just beginning to recover, but these demonstrations are pulling us backward. Let those who looted and caused mayhem face the full force of the law,” he said.

Retired NICA Church Bishop, Njeru Nyaga, echoed the Senator’s sentiments, urging the Government to open avenues for meaningful engagement with the youth.

He condemned destruction of property witnessed in several towns, saying that criminal acts in the name of protest must not be tolerated.

“Yes, young people have valid concerns, but burning buildings and looting businesses is not the solution. The government must listen, and the youth must remain peaceful,” he said.
