PS promises fair sports opportunities for Migori youth

Principal Secretary for Youth Affairs and Creative Economy, Fikirini Jacob, has reaffirmed the government’s commitment to strengthening Kenya’s sporting landscape.

He emphasised that the country continues to solidify its position as a global sporting powerhouse.

He noted that the Talanta Stadium is now over 90 per cent complete, with preparations for CHAN and AFCON progressing well.

The construction of several sports academies across the country, he added, further demonstrates the government’s efforts to nurture sporting excellence.

Speaking in Uriri Constituency during the Super Cup Finals organised by CPA Evans Ogutu Ouma at Sibueche Grounds, the PS praised Migori County for its emerging talent, discipline, and creativity.

He expressed confidence that the ongoing construction of the Migori Stadium will enable more local youth to rise into national sporting circles.

Addressing long-standing concerns about nepotism in national team selections, Mr Jacob said discussions between the Ministry and the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) are underway to ensure transparent and merit-based selection processes.

He commended the national coach for scouting players from local leagues and emphasised the need for strong structures from grassroots to national level to ensure credibility and long-term sporting success.

“In the long run, talent now pays. With proper structures, young people from Migori and across the country will join the growing list of beneficiaries in the creative and sports sectors,” he said.

At the same event, tournament organiser Evans Ogutu Ouma said the initiative focuses on three pillars: nurturing talent to prevent youth involvement in drugs and crime, improving sports infrastructure to widen opportunities, and ensuring football becomes a reliable source of income for young players rather than just a pastime.

Migori County has benefited from the national government through the ongoing construction of the Sh700 million Migori Stadium, which is almost 50 percent complete.

Once finished, the facility will have a seating capacity of 10,000 and a running track, making it one of the most modern sports complexes in the Nyanza region.
