Senator Mundigi defends CS Ruku and Governor Mbarire remarks

Embu Senator Alexander Mundigi has defended Public Service Cabinet Secretary Geoffrey Ruku and Governor Cecily Mbarire over their recent remarks suggesting a possible split of the Mt. Kenya region, describing the comments as a “slip of the tongue.”

Two weeks ago, CS Ruku and Governor Mbarire stated that they were ready, if necessary, to divide the region into two distinct blocs, Mt. Kenya East and Mt. Kenya West.

They argued that the larger Mt. Kenya region has suffered from poor representation and marginalization in the allocation of government resources.

The leaders maintained that the region must chart its own political course while rejecting narratives that do not reflect its interests and development priorities. They emphasized that they would not accept attempts by their western counterparts to promote hatred against President William Ruto and his government.

According to CS Ruku and Governor Mbarire, the current administration has delivered fairly to the region, with projects being distributed equitably and representation secured at the highest levels, including Prof. Kithure Kindiki, who currently serves as Deputy President.

Senator Mundigi suggested that the remarks by Ruku and Mbarire could have been provoked by the political pressure from the opposition, particularly former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, who has been pushing the “one term” agenda.

Mundigi said Gachagua has reportedly criticized Mt. Kenya East leaders who have refused to join his political government, which may have influenced the statements made by the two officials.

Speaking to the press in Embu Town on Wednesday, Mundigi reassured residents that the region remains intact and that there are no plans for an actual split. He stressed the importance of maintaining unity within the vote-rich region, particularly as the country approaches the 2027 general elections.

Mundigi also urged the region to continue supporting the Kenya Kwanza Government and give President Ruto a second term, highlighting his achievements in uniting the country and advancing development.

Looking ahead, he stated that Mt. Kenya East would continue backing Deputy President Kindiki, with the aim of propelling him to the presidency after Ruto completes his second term in 2032.

“We want, once President Ruto finishes his two terms, to have one of our own, Prof. Kindiki, become president in 2032,” Mundigi said.

The senator’s remarks come amid heightened political discussions in the region ahead of the 2027 general elections, emphasizing the need for unity and strategic positioning.
