Safaricom, through the M-Pesa Foundation, has committed Sh32 million towards the renovation of the Tudor Alms House in Mombasa County, as part of the company’s 25th Anniversary celebrations.
The Century-old Charitable Institution, will undergo restoration works aimed at improving living conditions for the elderly residents while strengthening programmes in education, health, business, and environmental sustainability.
Speaking during the donation ceremony, Mombasa Governor Abdulswamad Sharif Nassir thanked Safaricom for selecting Mombasa as one of the beneficiaries of the Anniversary projects, describing the partnership as a Vote of Confidence in the County’s Development Agenda.
“I want to thank Safaricom for choosing Mombasa. This year will be remembered for many milestones: ODM at 20 years, Safaricom at 25, M-Pesa at 18, M-Pesa Foundation at 15, and the Alms House at 100,” Governor Nassir exclaimed.
The Governor announced plans to expand the Tudor Alms House Health Facility to serve the Wider Tudor community beyond the current elderly patients.
“We are exploring ways to expand the Hospital, so that more residents can access care. I have requested the health and public works departments to work with the contractor to make this possible,” he said.
The Governor revealed that the County will launch the Mombasa Care programme in partnership with Safaricom, featuring a feedback system linking all hospitals directly to the Governor’s office through a toll number to ensure accountability in service delivery.
He also added that the county’s Food for Education programme, will be expanded to include elderly residents at Tudor Alms House.
Franklin Okata, representing the M-Pesa Foundation, said the donation reflects the organisation’s commitment to transforming lives and supporting community resilience.
“The Sh32 million support for the Tudor Alms House will not only restore dignity to its residents but also strengthen programmes in education, health, business, and the environment,” Okata said.
Safaricom’s Coast Regional Business Leader, Jackson Mutua, pledged continued partnership with Mombasa residents in building an inclusive future.
“We are grateful for the support from the people of Mombasa. Safaricom and the M-Pesa Foundation will continue walking with you in our shared goal of building a better future,” Mutua said.
Likoni MP, Mishi Mboko praised Governor Nassir for his leadership and cooperation with the private sector, describing such partnerships as vital for County Development.
“Governor Nassir has shown that true leadership is about teamwork and vision. Today’s partnership with the M-Pesa Foundation proves that when we come together, we can uplift every corner of our community,” she said.
Mvita MP, Mohamed Soud Machele commended the Foundation’s efforts but urged Safaricom to extend support to youth empowerment through sports.
“Tudor has immense talent in basketball and football. I urge the M-Pesa Foundation to nurture these talents, because today, talents also pay,” Machele said.
He also called for improvement of sports facilities in schools, including Makande, Tudor, and Makupa Primary, noting that investing in grassroots sports will nurture future champions.
Likoni Majority Leader, Athman Wamwiri, noted that partnerships between the County Government and private entities like Safaricom continue to bring tangible change to Mombasa residents.
The renovation project is expected to improve living conditions for the elderly, create opportunities for skill development, and enhance community engagement at the facility.
