Siaya and Bungoma Counties have secured the men’s and women’s trophies in the Paravolleyball games during the national trials held at Makueni Girls High School in Makueni Subcounty on Saturday.
In the men’s Paravolleyball, Siaya trounced Uasin Gishu County 3-0 after dominating 19-25, 14-25 and 18-25 in the three sets.
Following the hotly contested games, Uasin Gishu and Makueni Counties took the second and third place trophies in men’s paravolleyball games. Makueni edged out Nairobi County to take the trophy.
In the women’s paravolleyball, Bungoma defeated Nairobi County 3-0 in the three sets, 13-25, 21-25 and 18-25 respectively in the hotly contested games.
Second and third positions of the women’s paravolleyball were picked up by Nairobi and Makueni, whereby Makueni defeated the Uasin Gishu team 2-0 in two sets, 32-30 and 25-23 respectively.
The three-day event, which ran from Thursday to Saturday, culminated in selecting a Kenyan squad that will play in the International Paravolleyball Championships scheduled to be held in China in 2026.
Four athletes from Makueni County earned a slot on Kenya’s National team that will represent the country in the International Paravolleyball Championships in China next year.
Among those chosen on the women’s Paravolleyball team are Purity Mueni, Florence Manza, Caroline Mueni and Everlyne Mutuku, who will join the 12-member national squad after they showed exemplary performance in the national trials.
The game attracted top teams from across the country namely Laikipia, Nakuru, Vihiga, Kisumu, Meru, Mombasa and Migori counties. However, many counties failed to send teams to the Paravolleyball national trials.
Speaking to the Press on Saturday, Makueni County Sports Director Ambrose Kisoi hailed the achievement as a testimony to the county’s strategic investment in disability sports, saying it is a platform for identifying talent and nurturing it, especially at the grassroots level.
“I congratulate the athletes for their selection to the national team. This achievement is as a result of investing in sports where the administration is committed to talent development and inclusion to create opportunities for athletes with disabilities,” Kisoi said.
