State releases Sh175B to revive stalled road projects nationwide

Stalled road works within the country are set to resume as the government sets aside Sh175 billion for their completion.

Speaking in Kajiado Central after commissioning Oloosuyian bridge, the Cabinet Secretary for Roads and Transport, Davis Chirchir, said that the government is geared towards pushing construction of roads across the whole country.

He revealed that 40 per cent of the road construction fund has already been paid to the contractors according to a complementary supplementary agreement.

“The contractors are therefore supposed to resume work within ten days as the government works to process the next 40 percent from Monday next week. Payment will be made according to work delivery,” he added.

However, the government has fully paid the contractors who were owed Sh50 million and below.

The CS remarked that the funds raised were for specific stalled projects and therefore won’t be diverted to other projects.

He pledged to work closely with the Kajiado county leadership to open up the county in terms of road infrastructure, as it falls under the Nairobi Metropolitan Transport Authority so that people could move out of Nairobi city into their residential areas in Kajiado.

The CS revealed that the Oloosuyian bridge, which connects Kajiado Central and West constituencies, was built by the Kenya Rural Roads Authority (KeRRA) at a cost of Sh124 million.

CS Chirchir pledged to immediately build a 1-kilometre tarmac road that connects the bridge to Kajiado town from the supplementary budget, while the other 9 km that connect the bridge all the way to Kipeto town would be built later.
