Tharaka Nithi Assembly Appoints New Majority Leader

In a leadership reorganisation aimed at enhancing legislative efficiency and accountability in the Tharaka Nithi County Assembly, Magumoni MCA Justin Kithinji has taken over as the new Majority Leader, replacing Mukothima MCA Luke Marengo.

The assembly leadership change also included the removal of the deputy majority leader, Njagi Joseph Kinyua, who was replaced by Ms. Lucy Njagi in a move executed in accordance with the County Assembly’s Standing Orders and the Constitution.

Karingani MCA, Murithi Gaturo, who supported the leadership change, said the Assembly required strong leadership that promotes transparency, accountability, and teamwork.

“We believe in decorum and leading by example. This decision was necessary to strengthen the integrity of the Assembly’s operations,” said Gaturo.

Speaking after the changes, former Majority Leader Luke Marengo reaffirmed his commitment to serve residents through his legislative, oversight, and representation roles.

“Leadership is not about titles. I will continue serving the people of Mukothima and championing development,” said Marengo, “Adding that his intention has always been to speak out for proper service delivery.

He noted that he believes his removal was influenced by his stance on public accountability but said he respects the Assembly’s decision.

In his maiden speech after taking office, MCA Justin Kithinji expressed gratitude to his colleagues for bestowing the huge responsibilities upon him and pledged to promote collaboration within the Assembly.

“I will work with all leaders to ensure the interests of wananchi come first. Development and good governance remain our top priorities,” he stated.

The leadership changes come amid growing calls across the county for strengthened county governance and transparent service delivery.
