Tharaka Nithi youth urged to seize Nyota programme opportunity

National Youth Opportunities Towards Advancement (NYOTA) Promoter in Tharaka-Nithi and Meru Counties, Beatrice Karwitha, has called on young people in the areas to take full advantage of the empowerment programme, describing it as a “game-changer” for local communities through the implementation of sustainable business ideas and projects.

Speaking at the close of a four-day training on social, emotional and core business skills, Karwitha urged the 400 beneficiaries drawn from five wards to remain disciplined and focused as they embark on their enterprises.

Each trainee will eventually receive Sh50,000, amounting to Sh5 million in total,

to kick-start their ventures.

“This is the first youth programme where you are given money that you are not expected to pay back. The only mistake you can make is to divert it to other purposes rather than your chosen businesses,” she said.

Karwitha emphasised the role of trainers, who will continue mentoring the beneficiaries during the implementation period.

She noted that in cases where specialised expertise is required—such as veterinary services for livestock farmers—youths are free to seek assistance from government officers or liaise with their trainers and National Government Administration Officers (NGAOs).

She encouraged collaboration among the trainees, citing the example of poultry farmers sourcing maize for feed from colleagues.

“Don’t be mean but support each other so you can grow together,” she added.

Karwitha said proper utilisation of the funds could significantly transform the county’s economy, aligning with the Kenya Kwanza Government’s Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda.

“You have been given a rare opportunity to shine in your areas of business advancement. Go spread the government agenda and support your fellow youth as you run your businesses,” she told the gathering.
