Vihiga County joined the rest of the world in celebrating World Food Day at Gisambai Ward under the theme “Hand in Hand for Better Food and a Better Future.”
The colourful event brought together farmers, agricultural stakeholders, and residents in recognition of agriculture as the backbone of the county’s economy.
Speaking during the event, County Executive Committee Member (CECM) for Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries, Julius Maruja, commended farmers and partners for turning up in large numbers to mark the day. He called on agricultural field officers to be more proactive in supporting farmers with timely and practical information to help boost productivity.
Mr. Maruja encouraged farmers to take advantage of value chain development programmes initiated by the County Government, saying such initiatives are vital in improving livelihoods and promoting agribusiness. He further urged farmers to join cooperatives and form groups to enable them to access government support and development opportunities.
County Chief Officer for Agriculture, Dr. Betty Mulianga, emphasised the need for farmers to strengthen governance structures within their groups and diversify into the production of fruits and vegetables.
“Ensure you observe nutritious food production, embrace climate-smart agriculture, and explore available markets for your produce,” she advised.
Gisambai Ward MCA, Eric Odei, appealed to the Department of Agriculture to facilitate extension officers to regularly visit farmers and offer guidance on modern farming practices to improve yields.
The event also featured exhibitions showcasing locally produced crops and livestock products, reflecting Vihiga’s commitment to sustainable food systems and agricultural innovation.
