Woman Rep calls for strict laws against sexual offenders

Kisii Woman Representative Dorice Aburi has called for punitive measures against men impregnating underage girls and those found guilty of defilement.

Speaking to the press during a meeting with teen mothers at the Gender-Based Violence (GBV) Recovery Centre in Kisii town, Aburi said she had tabled a Bill in Parliament with strict measures to discourage potential sex offenders.

The Woman Rep noted the Bill, which seeks to amend the Sexual Offenses Act (2006), had gone through the first reading and if passed will ensure the students and members of the public are adequately sensitized on matters of GBV.

She decried that most victims of sexual violence lacked knowledge regarding the collection and preservation of evidence thereby weakening the prosecution of perpetrators.

Aburi also encouraged the teen mothers to register under the Social Health Authority (SHA) program so that they can access free prenatal and postnatal care services.

The legislator assured youths who had dropped out of school due to various challenges that she would sponsor those willing to go back to school.
