Youth empowered as road project kicks off

Leaders in Kiambu County want local youth given priority in the construction of the Thindigua–Laurette–Windsor Highway Road project

The leaders, led by Kiambu Town Member of Parliament Machua Waithaka, said the deliberate inclusion of young people was central to his development agenda.

“We agreed with the contractor that the labour works would be undertaken by the youth from this area. This is more than just a road; it is a commitment to empowering our young people with opportunities that restore hope and dignity,” said Waithaka.

For young residents of Thindigua, the project is more than just employment; it is a lifeline. George Mwangi, who has already been enlisted, said the initiative will bring real change.

“For years, we have struggled to find work. Being absorbed into this project gives us not only income but also dignity. It feels like a door to our future has finally opened,” he said with optimism.

The project has sparked optimism among residents, particularly young people, who are expected to benefit from job opportunities and economic growth.

For years, poor road conditions have hindered transport and growth in the area, but a new project is expected to change this.

The project, implemented under the Kenya Urban Roads Authority (KURA) and funded through the National Government Constituency Development Fund (NGCDF), is not just about improving infrastructure but also about empowering the community.

In line with agreements made during a public participation forum, the contractor will prioritize employing local youth in the construction works.

Speaking during the launch, Kiambu Town Member of Parliament Machua Waithaka said the deliberate inclusion of young people was central to his development agenda.

For instance, another youth, Nicole Njeri, echoed similar sentiments, highlighting the importance of skills development.

“We are not only getting jobs but also learning. This kind of experience is valuable because it prepares us for other opportunities in life. For me, this is the beginning of a brighter tomorrow,” she said.

Beyond job creation, the project is expected to spur economic growth by opening up the area to more investors, businesses, and services. Improved infrastructure is also set to reduce transport costs, ease movement, and boost productivity for residents.

Furthermore, MP Waithaka revealed that the long-awaited expansion of Kiambu Road into a dual carriageway will commence soon, a development he described as crucial for unlocking the region’s economic potential.

“My leadership remains committed to delivering meaningful development that touches the lives of our people. Yangu ni Kazi Tu,” he reaffirmed.

As roadworks begin in earnest, the dusty stretch of Thindigua is transforming into a symbol of empowerment. For the youth, this is not just a tarmacked road; it is a pathway to progress, skills, and a future filled with possibilities.
