Youth urged to join SACCOs for affordable financial support

Youth in Kisii County have been encouraged to join Savings and Credit Cooperative Organizations (SACCOs) to access affordable financing and reduce reliance on high-interest loans.

Speaking during the opening of AFRESA SACCO’s fourth branch at Kwanza Place Building in Kisii town, the County Executive Committee (CECM) Member for Environment, Cyrus Nyabicha, observed that many young people in the county borrow from informal lenders due to lack of access to cheaper credit.

Nyabicha urged the youth to embrace SACCOs as a sustainable way to access low-interest loans while fostering a culture of savings. “SACCOs also offer mentorship and training opportunities, helping young members build financial literacy and entrepreneurial skills,” he said.

The CECM emphasized that SACCOs are regulated institutions, operating under stipulated frameworks to ensure they provide sustainable dividends to members. He added that the county government will provide a supportive environment for the new branch, noting the initiative forms part of broader efforts to economically empower micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs).

“I believe this SACCO brings unique opportunities to our people, enabling growth and allowing them to tap into Kisii’s economic potential,” he remarked.

AFRESA SACCO Chairman, Dr. Berry Odhiambo, said Kisii is a vibrant economic hub in South Nyanza, and the organization is committed to supporting MSMEs with access to finance, markets, and business skills. He cited successful similar expansions in Kisumu, Nyamira, and Kakamega counties and noted that the Kisii branch will serve as a benchmark for fast-tracking MSME growth.

Looking ahead to 2026, Dr. Odhiambo revealed plans to open satellite offices to bring services closer to residents. “We aim to make financial support more accessible to all members and extend our reach to more communities,” he said.

The new branch is expected to provide youth and other members with convenient financial services, mentorship, and tools to grow their businesses sustainably, contributing to the county’s broader economic development.
