Zetech University’s outstanding role in championing student-led innovations has earned the institution the Best Student-Led Club Award at the 2025 Commercialization and Entrepreneurial Institutional Leaders (CEIL) Summit.
The accolade presented by the Kenya National Innovation Agency (KeNIA) in Mombasa this week highlights the transformative impact of the institution innovations championed by its Innovation, Entrepreneurship and Technology (iZET) Hub.
The hub, the institution’s flagship innovation centre has brought about initiatives such as the Wezesha Incubation Programme that has provided learners with mentorship, resources, and industry partnerships to convert bold ideas into viable business ventures.
The institution’s Vice Chancellor Prof. Njenga Munene said the recognition affirms the resilience, creativity, and ingenuity of students in innovations.
Speaking after receiving the award, the VC lauded the iZET Hub for empowering learners to design solutions for real-world challenges through programmes such as hackathons, mentorship forums, and community engagement projects.
These initiatives, he noted, had cultivated entrepreneurial mindsets and digital skills, resulting in measurable social impact and contributing to national development.
“The iZET Hub is tangible proof of how universities can function as powerful engines of innovation. This is just the beginning, the drive displayed by our students is inspiring, and with more innovations, the future of this country is bright,” Prof Munene said.
He added that the award aligns with broader national efforts to promote grassroots innovation by enhancing collaboration between academia and industry.
At the CEIL Summit, themed “Catalyzing Innovation and Entrepreneurial Ecosystems,” the Head of Public Service, Mr. Felix Koskei, endorsed the establishment of student-led innovation clubs in universities.
Among the standout innovations developed at the university are an electric tuk tuk and motorbike aimed at promoting sustainable transport, as well as advanced security solutions that restrict unauthorized access to premises.
