650 teams set for Governor Wavinya Cup kickoff

A total of 650 teams are set to participate in the 3rd edition of the Governor Wavinya Cup, officially launched by Machakos Governor Wavinya Ndeti under the theme “Nurturing Talent, Greening Our Future and Empowering Generations.”

The soccer tournament, which begins on September 20 and runs through December 13, 2025, brings together teams drawn from all 40 wards in the county. Winners will walk away with a cash prize of Sh1 million.

Speaking during the launch of sports extravaganza at Kasooni Catholic Church grounds in Mumbuni North Governor Wavinya, emphasized that the tournament is more than just a football competition but it is a powerful tool for empowerment and transformation.

“This tournament is not just about winning but about giving our young people a platform to shine, to be disciplined and to use their energy positively,” said Wavinya.

Launched in 2022, the Governor’s Cup targets youth, women, people with disabilities, and vulnerable groups, offering opportunities for talent development and career progression.

The initiative also promotes social interaction and community unity through sports.

Wavinya highlighted success stories that have emerged from the previous editions of the tournament, including Mary Nthambi, a two-time Women’s Premier League champion currently playing for the Police Bullets, and Felix Mwendwa of Kaluluini FC, who is undergoing professional scouting in Spain.

She noted that the tournament also shields young people from abuse of leisure time and political manipulation by providing meaningful engagement and avenues for earning a livelihood.

To further enrich the tournament, new activities have been introduced this year including professional training sessions, talent scouting led by sports legends, environmental awareness campaigns, and tree planting exercises. These additions aim to enhance life skills and productivity among the youth.

The Governor reaffirmed her commitment to using sports as a vehicle for growth, discipline, and community development, stating that the tournament fosters resilience, self-reliance, and a strong sense of identity among participants.
