822 youth in Nyamira to benefit from Kazi Mtaani initiative

Eight hundred and twenty-two jobless youths in Nyamira County will be recruited to benefit from the transformative climate work 2025 initiative, popularly dubbed kazi mtaani.

Nyamira County commissioner Erastus Mbui, while launching the county technical implementation committee to supervise the implementation of the programme confirmed that the government is committed in tackling joblessness among the youth in this country and cushioning them from dire economic vulnerability.

“This opportunity for jobless youths to work and earn is timely because most of our youths are struggling to survive and make ends meet through tough economic constraints, a crisis which has struck many in the entire country,” he county commissioner said.

He highlighted that apart from allowing youths to be empowered and earn a living, the programme will equally impact our communities through improving the quality of our roads and improving the environment through seedling tubings for tree planting and road beautification and mitigating the effects of climate change.

“The programme was started in 2024 where it was being carried out in Nairobi to clean the Nairobi River. The government is now officially rolling out this programme across the whole country, where over 110,000 youths will be recruited. Three major sectors will be given priority for the works to be undertaken in this year’s Kazi Mtaani initiative. They include roads and infrastructure, housing and urban development and environment,” Commissioner Mbui said.

He elaborated that roads and infrastructure works will focus mainly on the repair of roads using labour-intensive methods, landscaping and greening the highway and roadways with rightful seedlings, bush clearing, unclogging the drainage, and street cleaning. Works under the environment section will involve seedling tubing, tree nursery development and nurturing of already grown trees and for housing the employed youths will be engaged in making Interlocking Soil Stabilized Blocks (ISSBs) and waste solid management in marketplaces.

County Housing department director, Boaz Mireri confirmed that officers from the key technical departments involved in making the youth’s work-plan, mapping out areas which will be given priority once the exercise commences have already been notified saying they are part of the implementation committees to ensure the youths work diligently to give the county a clean greener look.

The County Executive Committee Member (CECM) for infrastructure. roads and public works. Dr. Grace Nyamongo is very optimistic about the benefits the county will accrue courtesy of the Climate worx programme and promised total cooperation and support to ensure the six-month programme is a success in Nyamira County.

Nyamira County will recruit 795 workers and 27 supervisors who are between the age of 18 to 35 years whereby workers will be paid Sh.500 per day and Sh.580 per day for supervisors. Application for all qualified youths is done online for selection and placement.
