ODM chair-elect calls on residents to fully embrace broad-based government for development

The newly elected Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) Kericho County Chair Ann Chepkwony has called on the people of Kericho to rally behind the broad-based government, describing it as a critical vehicle for peace, unity, and sustainable development.

Chepkwony, who won the ODM grassroots elections with 63 out of 66 votes cast, said the inclusive approach by government has provided an unprecedented platform for democratic growth, fair competition, and orderly transition of leadership at the grassroots level.

“I want to thank the broad-based government because it has made it possible for us to conduct peaceful elections without fear or division. The stability and calm we witnessed throughout the process is a testimony that governance works best when inclusivity is at its core,” said Chepkwony.

“This is the kind of environment Kericho needs in order to thrive, one where individuals can compete fairly, express themselves freely, and unite behind shared goals without suspicion or intimidation. It is in such an environment that genuine leadership can emerge and flourish,” added Chepkwony.

She further emphasized that inclusivity is not only about representation but also about creating opportunities for economic and social advancement.

“When we embrace unity and inclusivity under a broad-based government, we position our county to attract development projects, investments, and empowerment programmes that directly benefit the people. This is not just about politics; it is about progress, livelihoods, and the future we are building for generations to come,” noted Mrs. Chepkwony.

The chair-elect also stressed that the broad-based governance model offers a unique chance to uplift women and young people, who often face barriers in leadership and decision-making.

“We must seize this moment to nurture young leaders, support women’s participation, and ensure that voices at the grassroots are amplified in shaping county and national priorities. A strong society is one that invests in its people by allowing them to participate meaningfully in leadership and development,” remarked Chepkwony.

In her acceptance speech, she pledged to work tirelessly with her new team to build cohesion within the ODM family in Kericho, expand membership, and align county efforts with national socio-economic priorities.

“My commitment is to serve with unity, transparency, and dedication so that together we can advance welfare, strengthen institutions, and position Kericho as a key player in Kenya’s development journey. Leadership must be about service and results, not about self-interest,” she said.

Other officials elected to serve alongside her include Deputy Chairperson Mr. Peter Ngeno, Treasurer Ms. Lisa Cheruiyot, Secretary Mr. Paul Chemurin, and Organizing Secretary Mr. Wilfred Kiptoo. The team pledged to deliver on their mandate and strengthen grassroots structures to make the party more responsive to citizens’ needs.

Delegates at the event commended the peaceful and democratic nature of the ODM grassroots elections, noting that it reflected a maturing political culture and a deepening of democratic values in Kericho County. Security agencies were also praised for ensuring calm throughout the process.

Looking ahead, Mrs. Chepkwony said the leadership in Kericho would actively align its priorities with the Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA), which emphasizes grassroots empowerment, household resilience, and inclusive growth.

“By strengthening grassroots structures, empowering households, and building economic resilience, Kericho will not only benefit from the opportunities of the broad-based government but will also contribute meaningfully to Kenya’s long-term prosperity,” concluded Chepkwony.
