Kirinyaga county is set to undergo a significant transformation following the handover of a site for the construction of 487 modern homes under the National Affordable Housing Programme in Sagana.
The housing project, which is in its first phase, is part of President William Ruto’s plan to provide affordable and decent homes for Kenyans.
Governor Anne Waiguru said the project will not only provide modern housing for residents but also create at least 300 direct jobs for the local youth, thus opening up opportunities for small businesses, artisans, transporters, and suppliers, emphasizing that the development will stimulate the county’s economy and attract long-term investors.
Waiguru has since reconnected the housing program to the Sagana Agro-Industrial City Masterplan, a transformative plan that includes an Export Processing Zone(EPZ) and a Special Economic Zone(SEZ).
The masterplan is intended to establish Kirinyaga as a regional center for manufacturing, trade, and agribusiness.
“This is how we position Kirinyaga as a vibrant hub for investors and opportunities. Our vision is to ensure that our farmers, traders, and professionals all benefit from an economy that is expanding and inclusive,” Waiguru said.
The Governor’s remarks were echoed by Kariti MCA Jeremiah Makimi, who praised her leadership for securing 252 acres of public land that had previously been grabbed by scrupulous individuals before setting it apart for the Industrial Park.
“You have brought back hope in Kirinyaga and changed the face of our county. Recovering this land has restored confidence in local development,” Makimi said.
Meanwhile, Kirinyaga County Assembly Majority Leader Benson Ngahu also lauded the Governor, saying her track record in implementing projects under the devolved government framework has cemented her development legacy.
“The Governor has served the county well and delivered on her promises. The fruits of devolution are evident in the projects we are launching today,” he stated.
Waiguru reaffirmed her commitment to fulfilling her campaign pledges, promising to leave behind a county where every resident can flourish through access to opportunities, services, and infrastructure.
The Sagana Affordable Housing Project is expected to complement ongoing infrastructure projects in the county, including national government road networks and market modernization, which together are aimed at easing trade, boosting agriculture, and making Kirinyaga one of the most competitive counties in the country.
