Interior principal secretary Raymond Omollo has assured the nation about the government’s preparedness to host this year’s Mashujaa Day celebrations scheduled to be held in Kitui town in October 20, 2025.
PS Omollo while speaking after the site inspection on the progress of the construction works at Ithookwe stadium, Kitui state lodge and rehabilitation of Ithookwe Airstrip, revealed that 80 percent of the work has already been done.
“I am impressed by the progress of the construction works at the stadium. We are optimistic of completing the construction works in time as the remaining 20 percent of the work is largely involving roofing. We will host the Mashujaa Day celebration at the stadium,” said the interior Principal Secretary.
According to PS Omollo, the stadium has a seating capacity of 10,000 people. However, he said that with proper arrangements and security measures put in place, the stadium can accommodate beyond this seating capacity.
PS Omollo noted that this year’s Mashujaa Day Celebration will be marked under the theme of energy and with more focus on renewable resources.
“The theme marking the celebrations and choosing the Kitui County to host Mashujaa Day Celebration corresponds well since the County is among the counties that have low coverage on last-mile electricity connectivity,” said PS Omollo.
The Interior PS praised the multi-agency Mashujaa Day Celebration preparations committee saying the team was progressing smoothly, with both security and logistical plans firmly in place.
The Kenya Urban Roads Authority (KURA) and the Kenya Rural Roads Authority (KeRRA) are finalising works on more than 10 kilometres of access roads linking the stadium and the State Lodge, where President William Ruto will host a luncheon after the national celebrations.
PS Omollo praised the cooperation between the National Government and the Kitui County Government under Governor Julius Malombe, saying the preparations remain on track.
“The government under President William Ruto has consistently invested in sustainable infrastructure in each host county, ranging from new stadiums to improved access roads, electricity connections, and water supply. These investments remain in place long after the celebrations hence supporting sports development, boosting local economies, and improving community livelihoods,” the PS said.
He was accompanied by Kitui County Commissioner Kipchumba Rutto, county and subcounty security teams, as well as officers from the National Government Administration Officers (NGAOs).
