Mandera marks International Day of Peace, calls for end to clan conflicts

As the world marked the International Day of Peace, Mandera County residents came together in a united call to foster lasting peace across the region.

Local leaders, including elders, and government officials gathered for commemorations where the issue of recurring clan conflicts was raised as a key obstacle to sustainable peace and development.

Mandera communities were urged to put aside their differences, embrace dialogue, and work closely with government agencies to end the cycle of violence that has disrupted lives and livelihoods for years.

With one voice, the Mandera community reaffirmed its commitment to peacebuilding initiatives, pledging to support reconciliation efforts and improve security in hotspot areas.

A Deputy Director at the National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC) Liban Guyo called for the establishment of stronger conflict-resolution mechanisms to address disputes and ensure those responsible for violence are held accountable.

“For peace to prevail, no criminal should be shielded. Those causing insecurity must be flushed out so that justice can be served,” Guyo said.

Mandera Deputy County Commissioner (DCC) Solomon Cheboton emphasised the need to introduce early-warning systems on climate change to help communities share available resources and reduce competition that often fuels conflict.

“We must keep peace at all times so that development can be realised across Mandera County,” Cheboton added.

Peace actors in Mandera also vowed to continue preaching peace in every corner of the county, with the aim of building a united and harmonious Mandera.
