TVET institutions enhancing sports facilities to support CBC pathways

Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institutions across the country are upgrading sports facilities to support the Competency-Based Education (CBE) pathway in sports and creative arts.

Speaking in Mombasa during the conclusion of the Kenya Association of Technical Training Institutions (KATTI) National Championship Season Two games at the Kenya Coast National Polytechnic, Education Cabinet Secretary (CS) Julius Ogamba said the government is keen on strengthening the TVET sector to accommodate the first CBE cohort expected to join tertiary institutions in 2029.

He noted that the Ministry fully supports the integration of sports in technical education, and enhancing sports infrastructure will help institutions align with the CBE’s emphasis on talent development.

“We are encouraging this because one of the CBE pathways is in sports and creative arts,” said the CS.

“The first cohort of competency-based learners is currently doing their Grade 9 assessment, which ends on Monday, November 3, 2025. By the time they join tertiary institutions in 2029, we expect TVET institutions to have adequate facilities to nurture their talents.”

Migosi lauded the KATTI championship, now in its second year, for promoting teamwork, discipline, and innovation among trainees. He said such events help institutions identify gaps in infrastructure and training, allowing for continuous improvement.

At the same time, the CS also expressed sympathy to families affected by floods and mudslides in Elgeyo Marakwet County, where nine people, including a Grade 8 pupil, lost their lives on Friday, October 30, 2025.

“It is unfortunate about the disaster that happened. The government, through the disaster management system and various multi-agency teams, is assessing the extent of damage, including how many schools were affected,” he said

Migosi assured that no learner would miss national assessments due to the tragedy, saying alternative measures were being activated.

“We are making arrangements to ensure that students from affected areas sit for their exams next week,” he said. “Where necessary, we will relocate them to nearby schools, provide airlifts, and ensure sufficient transport logistics to support them.”
