Laikipia forms taskforce to enhance peace during festivities

Authorities in Laikipia County have established a multi-agency forum to tackle rising insecurity ahead of the festive season.

The committee, comprising community members, security officials, and business stakeholders, aims to curb crimes such as mugging, narcotics use, female genital mutilation (FGM), teenage pregnancies, early marriages, and urban robberies.

“We have realised that there are many gaps, and we want to ensure they are mainstreamed for sustained peace and security in the county,” stated Onesmus Kyatha, Laikipia County Commissioner.

One More Day Children Rescue Centre Director Dr. Helen Gathogo noted that crime rates typically spike during holidays. “Teen pregnancies and use of narcotics rise during Christmas. This is a situation that needs to be arrested before it balloons to other crises. It’s a critical season,” she said.

The forum formed on Wednesday this week is designed to promote sustained peace across the county through coordinated efforts, with parents being urged to remain vigilant and protect their children from falling victim to criminal activities during this period.

At the same time, residents were urged to volunteer information that could aid in boosting security in the county.
