Wajir County Governor’s wife Mrs Rukia Abdinasir has called on stakeholders to strengthen disability inclusion across all sectors of development.
Speaking at the International Day of Persons with Disabilities commemoration at the Wajir Museum, Ms Abdinasir said the county is committed to ensuring that Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) access equal opportunities during planning, budgeting, and service delivery.
Abdinasir, who represented Governor Ahmed Abdullahi, noted that the county had made progress in mainstreaming disability issues but urged actors to prioritise practical measures that improve daily lives.
“As we mark this important day, I reaffirm both my personal commitment and that of the County Government to ensure that no person with a disability is left behind in our journey toward social and economic transformation,” she said.
During the event, the Walkabout Foundation, in partnership with the County Government, distributed 100 wheelchairs to residents with mobility challenges.
The Governor’s wife thanked the organisation and other development partners for supporting rehabilitation efforts.
She commended humanitarian agencies, civil society groups, organisations of persons with disabilities, and community leaders for their role in advancing inclusion in the county.
County Disability Services Director Mohamed Abdi said his department was working to ensure accurate data on PWDs across all wards.
“This year’s theme guides us to build inclusive systems that promote dignity and participation. Reliable data is the starting point for planning effective programmes,” he said.
Parents, teachers, civil society groups, and health workers attended the event, which highlighted ongoing efforts to enhance accessibility and promote equal opportunities for PWDs.
