EACC arrests three traffic police officers for soliciting bribes

The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) has arrested three traffic police officers attached to Sondu Police Station for allegedly soliciting and receiving bribes from motorists along the Kisumu–Kisii Highway.

EACC spokesman Stephen Karuga said the officers, Inspector of Police Rachel Wangetha, Corporal Wilberforce Koffi and Corporal Shadrack Nerima were arrested following a targeted surveillance operation mounted after the Commission received complaints from motorists and members of the public over persistent extortion along the busy highway.
In a statement to the media, Karuga said investigators caught the officers in the act of allegedly demanding bribes from road users without carrying out vehicle inspections or enforcing traffic regulations, raising concerns over abuse of office and compromise of road safety.

Upon arrest, he said, the suspects were found in possession of cash in various denominations, suspected to be proceeds of corruption.

They were initially processed at the EACC Central Nyanza Regional Office in Kisumu before being escorted to Kisumu Railways and Ports Police Station, where they were booked pending further investigations.

Karuga said the arrests were part of an ongoing nationwide crackdown by the anti-graft agency targeting bribery and corruption on major highways, particularly during the festive season when traffic volumes increase and opportunities for extortion rise.
He added that said the Commission has intensified intelligence gathering and surveillance in essential public service sectors prone to corruption and reaffirmed EACC’s commitment to promoting integrity and accountability in public service.

He urged members of the public to report corruption incidents through the Commission’s established reporting channels.
