One man killed, 400 livestock stolen in Turkana East

One man was killed and 400 livestock including cattle and goats stolen in Lopii, Turkana East sub county in a raid conducted by suspected bandits from a neighbouring county.

The incident occurred on Thursday midday where armed bandits raided Lopii village.

James Ekaru, a resident, said the residents are living in fear after the incident that happened in broad daylight.

Area Member of Parliament Nixon Ng’ikor is now calling on the security agencies to move with speed to ensure the livestock are recovered and returned to their owners.

“It is very sad that herders who depended on these livestock are left without a source of livelihood at a time when schools are reopening. We are wondering whether this is sabotage because it happened just a few days after the head of state visited West Pokot and preached peace in a meeting attended by leaders from both Turkana and West Pokot counties,” said Ng’ikor.

Learning at Lopii primary school has also been affected as school remain closed in the first week of opening.

Teachers have also stayed away from the school over insecurity.

The incident delves a blow to peace building efforts that had succeeded in restoring normalcy in the area.
